Puberty Education for Developmentally

Disabled Youth for Ages 7 - 12


Course Outline

Because we are always improving our curricula, this outline provides a general idea of the topics covered but is not a rigid lesson plan. Here are the outcome objectives:

Session 1: Privacy, Bodies and Puberty
  • Students will learn puberty changes that happen for everyone
  • Students will learn the difference between Private and Public
  • Students will learn what changes occur during puberty
Session 2: Bodies with a Penis and Hygiene
  • Students will learn about genitals and penis parts inside and out
  • Students will learn about hygiene
Session 3: Bodies with a Vulva, Masturbation, and Pregnancy 
  • Students will learn about genitals and vulva parts inside and out
  • Students will learn how a pregnancy happens
  • Students will learn that masturbation is a private activity
Session 4: Relationships, Permission and Trusted Adults
  • Students will learn the difference between healthy and unhealthy relationships
  • Students will learn that permission is important for touch
  • Students will find a trusted adult to talk to about puberty and growing up

Session 2: People with a Penis and Changes

I. Introduction

II. Puberty Changes for Everyone
   a. Discussion of Changes everyone might go through
i. this may include: breast growth, body odor, erections, tingly feelings, pubic hair, facial hair, growth, mood swings
III. Hygiene
   a. Tips and reasons for taking care
IV. Penis Anatomy
   a. Review genitals and reproductive system
b. Visual Review of Path of sperm
V. Conclusion:
   a. Review Objectives
b. Answering questions anonymously

 a. Genitals and Reproductive System
b. Visual Review of Ovulation and Menstruation
c. Reasons why lubrication and erections may happen
III. Masturbation
   a. Private activity for private places
IV. Pregnancy
   a. How the egg gets to the sperm
   b. Pregnancy and when to be a parent
   c. Some people want to prevent pregnancy 
V. Conclusion:
